Dealing With Stress And Difficult Emotions
Dealing With Stress And Difficult Emotions
  • Clients come to coaching to move forward, set goals, get into action, use the accountability of coaching to stay on track.

However as coaches, while all the above are important, our focus is on the client’s life experience, not just a list of completed actions. We believe in making our clients enjoy the journey, savouring and appreciating each moment of their life as best they can.

  • ●  There are moments in coaching where the coach needs to help the client acknowledge their inner experience, what’s happening in the moment.

  • ●  We can’t avoid feeling the highs and lows of our life. That’s what gives richness and texture to life.

  • ●  Expanding into the present

  • ●  Being curious about it

  • ●  Slowing down to explore and appreciate it.

  • ●  Sometimes the most important changes happen at the internal level and may be necessary for external changes to follow.

    Expanding Your Emotions:

Imagine life as a river, flowing through time. In one place, the river is steady, serene. Then, it hits the rapids.
    Then a waterfall.
There are whirlpools, backwater and swamps.

The river of life narrows and suddenly speeds up.

Expanding into your emotions is about being fully aware and alive wherever you are on the river today: whether you are floating easily on your back, enjoying the sky and the sun, or tumbling through the chaos of white water.

Coachees have their plans and dreams and sometimes they don’t like where they are in the river. And yet, when you are in the rapids, the only thing to do is be in the rapids. You can wish it weren’t so, but that’s where you are. While you are busy making plans for the future, you are also in the present. You are in the process of your life. In this moment. Right now!

When Is It A Good Time To Help Our Clients Expand In Their Emotions:

    Doing Vs Being:
    • Most of us worship the god of Busyness. We would usually rather be doing something, whatever it is, than doing 'nothing'. (Ruby Wax)

    • ●  The mind loves to split. Being vs Doing is a construction of dualism. We think that being is the opposite of doing lots of stuff, which is understandable given where we are at with the frenetic busyness world view.

Ask yourself: “when you are really busy, stressed and your mind is really full, are you more or less effective? Often, things get done but it’s not effective.

    • ●  Proven techniques such as mindfulness allow you to panic less and think more clearly, thus being more efficient.

    • ●  Mindfulness allows you to reconnect to the present moment, not to drop everything.

    • ●  When you are calm, you are in a better position to judge what you need to do, to find the right goals
